The expertise of the Øresund Region in fine electronics has reached its best in medical electronic equipment. The region is a world leader in the development and production of medical electronics products and components, particularly hearing aid devices.

Widex and two other local hearing aid producers - Oticon and GN Resound - are estimated to cover about 25% of the global hearing device market. Digital hearing aids are now in their third or fourth generation, and the local firms do not want to give up their leading position in the technological development of these products . 

The region is a cluster of large companies, such as Widex and Oticon, as well as small firms  owned and run by two or three talented engineers. Common to most of these companies is that their research activities usually happen through co-operation with other companies and public research centres. Moreover, the development of a new product always involves the integration of three or four technological areas.
