Denmark (first) and Sweden (second) are followed by the
Netherlands, UK, Finland and Germany. The eEurope 2005 Index
computed assesses 28 European countries on the basis of their ICT
development and Internet usage and is a composite of five key
indicators: Internet usage, modern online public services,
eBusiness environment, information infrastructure security and
broadband.
Based on the performance of the countries, they are divided into
four categories: global leaders, totally aligned, somewhat aligned
and development required. Denmark and Sweden lead the global
leaders category, which also includes the Netherlands, UK, Finland
and Germany.
The study considers that the global leaders are outstanding
performers in the ICT domain at the international level and can
provide a rich set of best practices and case studies that can be
used by other nations seeking to improve their ICT development.
The e-Europe Index gains more importance because it is the first
study of the degree of alignment of the new EU member states and
the candidate countries Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey.
The business school INSEAD performed the study on behalf of the
software company SAP.
