PDA opens doors and cooks coffee
A communications system operated with a finger, chin, knee or maybe a toe will in the near future open up new possibilities for the disabled. Danish CePa Mobility has developed such a system.

“With a PDA and the communication technology Bluetooth, a severely disabled individual can control his or her surroundings with our product. He or she can open and close doors, cook coffee and send or read SMS. These are all tasks he or she today depend on assistance to do,” explains Niels Rasumssen CEO at CePa Mobility to Computerworld.

The small Danish firm has worked closely with users, research institutions, universities and private companies in developing their communication system Cepacom01. They are business partners with Teknologisk Innovation, HP, Microsoft and GN. The application is run on standard products such as PDAs HP 6340 and Qtek and uses Bluetooth for the transmission.

In contrast to an ordinary PDA, CePaCom01 scrolls through the menus and it is up to the user to stop at the wanted item. This is done with an on/off switch.

“It is the first communication solution in its kind that is intended for the severely disabled,” says Niels Rasmussen.
