Labs2 is installing a total of 1000 wireless Fon access points in collaboration with Fon, a Spanish company in charge of the Fon Community.
” We will create a powerful infrastructure that will make Lund one of the most interesting places in the world for developing broadband services. As a comparison, the wireless network will be more than 50 times faster than 3G,” says Jonas Birgersson, CEO at Labs2, in a press release.
The concept behind Fon networks is that users share their broadband capacity with others. Fon´s motto “Share your WiFi broadband access and enjoy WiFi all over the world” says it all.
To be part of the Fon community, users need to register and install Fon´s software in their wlan/wifi routers, and then they can access other’s access points for free. Later on, users may share or sell capacity to other users within their routers’ reach, or if they do not share their router they can also pay for access.
