Having a computer game developed in parallel with a film is rare in the gaming industry, but this is about to happen for Deadline Games. Their successful game Total Overdose has paved the way for a 2-year contract with film producer Donald Kushner.
Donald Kushner will be directing a film about drug Baron Pablo Escobar, and also a computer game in sync with the filming process. The choice to collaborate with Deadline Games was based on their capabilities as game developers as well as their experiences from Total Overdose, the first game to have Latin America and drugs as a theme, writes Deadline Games in a press release.
Traditionally, game publishers have financed major parts of the development, thereby acquiring the intellectual properties (IP) for the game and the developers receive royalties. The contract with Donald Kushner opens up for alternative forms of financing within the gaming industry.
As Chris Mottes, CEO at Deadlines Games, says to Berlingske, this kind of agreement can be more rewarding in the long run.
“We as a company will invest more money in the game compared to traditional contracts, and can take the development process further before contacting external financiers for capital,” says Chris Mottes.
This in turn means that Deadline Games will be able to keep the IPR and earn more if the game is successful.
Deadline Games was established as a game production company in 1996. The company is based in Copenhagen in the Øresund region.
