”There are many good stories in the world of cartoons that lead a slumbering existence. These good stories can become great entertainment on mobiles,” says Glenn Lau Rentius, CEO at Campfire, writes ComputerWorld.
The company has received 5 M DKK in venture capital funding from Vækstfonden to transform cartoons from comic books to mobiles, that adults and children alike use in their daily life.
So far the company has 2 employees and is collaborating with a Chinese company, which has 500 cartoonists working on making the cartoons digital.
It has been challenging to take the cartoons from the printed realm to a realm that is digital and suited for a mobile’s screen.
”We also have experimented with interactivity, so readers do not have to stick to the linear storytelling found in comic books. Just as in computer games, they can influence the story by choosing the actions of a character,” say Glenn Lau Rentius.
Vækstfonden’s investment is a part of its new strategy of investing in the digital entertainment industry. Especially the crossbreeding between cartoons and games is interesting, according to the management of Vækstfonden. “This is an area where Danes have special skills,” says Rolf Kjærgaard, director at Vækstfonden.
Vækstfonden estimates the European market for mobile entertainment with games, ring tones and other services to DKK 35 billion and with substantial growth potential.
Campfire is an animation studio and developer of direct-to-mobile interactive rich media content, small games and custom made software applications for mobile devices. The company was incorporated in 2003 and is based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
