The new RFID-solution will secure that information cannot be read by unauthorized parties. The increased security aspect will make it possible to use RFID technology in the aerospace industry, for prescription medication and transportation of hazardous goods, writes Comon.dk.
RFID is a modern barcode in the shape of a micro-chip. It can communicate wireless, does not require batteries and the chip can be used in everything from clothes and shoes to food packaging and medicine.
Previously anyone with a barcode reader could access information on an RFID-chip, making privacy issues a concern.
“All technologies can be misused; this is a well-known challenge for the RFID-technology. We want to use the RFID functionality but must also be aware of its limitations. The main goal for RFIDsec has been to develop a technology the consumers can trust,” says Henrik Granau, CEO of RFIDsec.
There are many advantages with the new solution. For instance the encryption technology developed will ensure that only authorized users have access to the information on the chip.
And when it comes to prescription medication, the RFID-chip could ensure the authenticity of the medication. It could protect against product piracy and patients getting the wrong medication. The solution also includes software that communicates with the chip via a RFID-reader and Web services, so the user can access it via the Internet.
RFIDsec, based in the Øresund region, is a start-up with 9 employees located at the science park IT-Væksthuset, 5te in Copenhagen.
The core of the company’s tag is a state-of-the-art patent-pending security technology, RFIDsec’s Secure Protocol. It ensures that information is always communicated in a secure manner. All information to and from the RFID is protected by strong cryptography.
